Exclusive Economic Zone

February 15, 2018

A countries Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is generally the 200 nautical miles (nmi) buffer around a country’s land; however, when the distance between two countries is less than 200 nmi the EEZ boundary is the mid-line between the countries. With respect to ballast water, the combined US and Canadian EEZs are used when defining arrivals and ballast water discharge as ‘coastwise’ or ‘overseas’.
